Three questions I am often asked during readings are ‘What is a soulmate?’, ‘Have I met my soulmate yet?’ and ‘When will I meet my soulmate?’
To me, a soulmate is somebody you can learn from, both positive and negative.
A soulmate is an ‘attraction’, not necessarily physical. A soulmate is a meeting of two minds and also a meeting of two energies.
I would class my own father as a soulmate because he taught me so much about life – not only in a caring, loving way, he taught me in a practical way as well. And through his illness, he taught me compassion, responsibility, forgiveness, respect.
He was sometimes hard but very fair. He was a kind and loving man and I have learnt from him how to apply the above qualities in my own life which is why I consider my father my soulmate.
A soulmate doesn’t make you a better person however, they can only inspire you to take action to be a better person yourself either by inspiring you through their own actions or through their words. A soulmate is someone you carry with you forever, no matter whether they are actually in your life now or not.
Another way to consider what is a soulmate is to think of a soulmate as someone who comes into your life and peels back the layers and exposes you to yourself.
A soulmate has the ability to tear apart your ego, show you your addictions and obstacles, break your heart open so new light can penetrate and generally give you a good shake up in order for you to transform your life for the better.
Do you have to live with a soulmate forever?
Certainly not. Sometimes it can be too painful because it was not meant to be a life long relationship and only a lesson in life, which once given and received should be moved on from.
If you don’t think you have found your soulmate yet, then think about your past… Your favourite teacher, your grandparents, past friendships and relationships etc. It is likely you have met many soulmates on your journey – and will continue to do so.

Keeping It Real
Hello Barry,
Thank you for this great article. Soulmates are made of two individuals who have had many romantic past lives together, so many that their souls gravitate back together in this lifetime because of these deep loving experiences they’ve shared. Finding our soulmates is not easy but definitely not impossible. When we are ready for them, they will show up in our lives. Also, meeting our soulmates can be hard because of our expectations. Most people usually expect their soulmate to be perfect for them. The reality behind is that this person will most likely be far away from what you thought you would actually meet. It takes time, dedication, love and lots of caring for a relationship to work. A soulmate is someone who is willing to make that effort with you to build strong foundations in a relationship.
It was a pleasure connecting with you today! Wishing you all the best!
